At Due South we have always insisted on sourcing food that satisfies our customers while fulfilling a wider ambition: to support local producers and suppliers and showcase the fabulous but often forgotten food that can be grown so well in this country.
We believe that the modern mantra of year-round choice has left us in a situation where seasonality is suppressed, where independent local farmers, fishermen, and food growers struggle to survive, where produce is transported over huge distances at great environmental cost, and where food is too often chosen for its durability and looks rather than for its flavour: in short, a situation in which our idea of choice is distorted. We let seasonality exert its influence and look forward with great anticipation to the new varieties that each month brings, convinced that food is special precisely because it isn't available 365 days a year.
Clearly, we aren't alone in this conviction: since we first opened our doors in autumn 2003, there’s been a tremendous amount of enthusiasm for our aim of serving uncomplicated and delicious local food in a relaxed, unpretentious setting. We were recently named Best Seaside Restaurant in Britain by The Observer Food Monthly and awarded a prestigious AA Rosette for the second year in a row.
We would like to say a heartfelt "thank you" to all our customers, who have been loyal, positive, and supportive, and to everyone who works so hard in and with Due South to ensure its continuing success.
